Kara Mshinda

Kara Mshinda (she/her) is a Philadelphia-area visual artist, anthropologist, and educator whose practice moves between documentary photography, collage, and photo-weaving to explore memory, diaspora, and intergenerational continuity. Trained in the anthropology of visual communication, she approaches image-making as both research methodology and community practice.

Kara taught Race, Identity, and Experience in American Art at Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University for several years and now serves as Network Co-Director of Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia. Her work has been exhibited in Philadelphia, Berlin, Chicago, and Mexico City. A 2024–2026 Resident Studio Artist at GrioXArts at Cherry Street Pier, Kara has facilitated community-based workshops in a range of settings including museums, schools, and community centers. Collaborative art-making and practicing cross-cultural dialogue remain at the center of her work.
