Approaches to Hollow Center explores erasure/nothingness and existence/being as a place of refuge from the accomplishment-oriented society that perpetuates isolation and the present-day threats associated with being an immigrant in the U.S.
At Asian Arts Initiative, along with NYC-based sound artist Cenk Ergün, Yamamoto collaborates and performs this dance with Philadelphia-based multidisciplinary artist Jose Ortiz-Pagán whose unique diasporic experience informs the work. The choreography arises from deep interpersonal yet philosophical conversations between the performers. In this in-between space, the performance incorporates slowness, physical intensity, and delicate balance. Together, they approach nothingness and being as a shifting condition held between two states.
This performance is supported by Creative Capital, National Performance Network, and the Teiger Foundation.
